Do you ever see a Pinterest post of a desktop screen looking like your dreamiest vision board?! I know I have…!!

A well-designed Mac home screen can boost productivity, give you a nostalgic feel within your working environment and create a workspace that feels inspiring. Customizing your desktop goes beyond changing the wallpaper—it’s about creating a cohesive, functional, and visually appealing environment. Here’s how to transform a standard Mac home screen into an aesthetic masterpiece.

This how to guide, will follow the directions using a Mac viewpoint, depending on the IOS device that you have… adjust accordingly and as always, my email is open for any conversation or challenges you may have… post related or not! Alright Alright, let’s get started. This may sound like a challenging task but… listed below is a simple how to guide on creating your very on customizable desktop for your Mac. These tips and tricks work wonders on MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, and iPad. I fear your Mac will be glowing by the time we are finished!

1. Choose a Theme for your wallpaper

Start with a wallpaper that sets the tone. Minimalist or solid background colours with soft gradients, neutral tones, or subtle textures create a clean look. For a more personalized touch, choose a theme—such as nature, retro, y2k, seasonal, beach-y, monochrome absolutely whatever speaks to YOU—find inspiration wallpapers that match it thorugh search engines like google or pinterest. Websites like Unsplash or Pexels offer high-quality, free options if you are looking to get a specific wallpaper.

Tip: If you are not a maximalist… avoid any overly busy images that distract from icons and widgets. This will make you feel overwhelmed during the process and ultimately you will not enjoy this creativity project you are diving into. No one wants that!

2. Organize Desktop Icons

A clutter-free desktop instantly looks more polished, if that is your style! I personally like a constrast inbetween minimalist and maximalist.. a perfect balance! Group similar files into folders and give them clear, simple names. Consider hiding desktop icons altogether for a minimalist look:

  • Go to Finder > Preferences > General
  • Uncheck all items under “Show these items on the desktop”

Alternatively, use a single “Workspace” folder to store everything and keep the desktop clean.

3. Customize Folder Icons

Custom icons can make the desktop feel cohesive. Download icon packs that match the chosen aesthetic—pastel, monochrome, or flat design styles work well. To change a folder icon:

  1. Copy the new icon image.
  2. Right-click the folder and select Get Info.
  3. Click the small folder icon in the top-left corner.
  4. Paste the new icon.

4. Use Widgets and the Notification Center

macOS widgets can display useful information while enhancing the design. Add widgets for weather, calendar, reminders, or notes that match the colour palette. Access them by clicking the date and time in the menu bar, then selecting Edit Widgets. See below for the non-apple specific widgets that I utilize within my customization process and why! Apple has some fantastic widgets though, if you are looking for a certain look, options are provided below for you to check out and discover what works best for you!

Choose widgets with clean designs and consistent colours to maintain visual harmony. Or get as maximalist as you want!

5. Customize the Dock

The Dock is central to the Mac interface, so refining it makes a big difference.

  • Remove unused apps by dragging them out of the Dock.
  • Rearrange icons for better workflow.
  • Adjust size and magnification in System Settings > Desktop & Dock.
  • For a sleeker look, enable Automatically hide and show the Dock.

Consider using third-party tools like cDock, uBar, WidgetWall, Silicio, Stickies, or Widgetter for advanced customization.

6. Adjust System Accent and Highlight Colors

macOS allows accent and highlight colour customization to match the overall theme.

  • Go to System Settings > Appearance.
  • Choose between Light, Dark, or Auto mode.
  • Select accent and highlight colours that complement the wallpaper and icons.

7. Add a Custom Screensaver

A stylish screensaver can complete the aesthetic. Choose from built-in options or download dynamic screensavers that display time, patterns, or animations. Keep it simple to avoid visual clutter.

8. Use a Consistent Font and Menu Bar Style

Apps like Bartender can help organize the menu bar by hiding unnecessary icons. For a cohesive look, use consistent typography across widgets and apps. macOS’s San Francisco font is clean and modern, but third-party tools can adjust system fonts if desired.

9. Explore Third-Party Customization Tools

Several apps can enhance the Mac’s visual appeal:

  • Wallpaper Engine for Mac – dynamic wallpapers
  • WidgetWall – custom widgets and layouts
  • Hidden Bar – minimalist menu bar management
  • ColorSlurp – color palette management for design consistency

10. Maintain the Aesthetic

Regularly tidy up files, update wallpapers seasonally, and refresh icons to keep the setup feeling new. Consistency and simplicity are key to maintaining an aesthetically pleasing workspace.

My Personal Walkthrough

This is my Christmas Desktop look!

You will first need to download a few apps to create this kind of look… and let’s be honest for any kind of creativity Pinterest is our best friend… ha! All apps listed below should be purchased (THEY’RE FREE) from the App Store. Premium features are available but are not required for this how to guide, though if you wish to explore paid options feel free.

App 1: WidgetWall

App 2: Silicio

App 3: Stickies

App 4: Widgetter

App 5: Not an absolute needed download but you will need Pinterest from your browser

WidgetWall

WidgetWall will give you that funky looking button on the desktop that is a fun addition to add onto your desktop and it gives you confetti when you click it! This is not needed and not connected to any form of productivity but it is fun… In the picture below you will see it on my layout! Also utilize the photos section from this widget selection as you are able to add and drop from not only your albums but files and URLs, to truly customize your desktop. You can customize the base colour which on my Christmas cover was red, and the background colour as pink as seen below. I chose to have my background simple with a solid neutral base however utilized the widgets to get that more creative and maximalist look.

You will also be able to choose where your image cover comes from (albums, Photos, File, URL) Once decided you can either browse your photos and files or select an album to shuffle.

With each selection notice that you can choose different sizing…! Play around with what you prefer! Feel free to follow my format or add, un-add features that make this your own.

Silicio

Silicio is the music bar! Some love it and some think it is too cluttered. I happen to be apart of the ladder or the in between space I mentioned earlier. All you need to do is download this app from the App Store, allow permissions and you are connected. If or when you clear you app (when you clear apps in the top left corner along with hiding your finder), Silicio will disappear however, one click on your desktop and it will re-appear. If this does not work, you can always click on the Silicio app within your dock menu and it will be right back to where you left it. Yes it is currently November and yes you all saw that right… Christmas music has started.

Stickies

Stickies is a download from the App Store as well that once you click on it from you dock menu they will appear on your desktop. This stickies app allows you to customize colours, text font, sizing and where you want this to fit on your desktop. Get creative this section does not have to just be a to-do list!

Widgetter

Widgetter will give you that seamless calendar and weather with no solid colour background. (it will say the beginning). Yes it looks different on the app but once you add as a widget that is how it will look!

Pinterest!!!! Find all the fun pictures that spike your creativity unless you simply want to use all your own pictures! Pinterest helped in giving me some of the Christmas essentials to help tie everything together. If you want this wallpaper to truly be your own you can also dive into editing resources like canva to create your own pictures, and customize wallpaper templates! This is not a fine tuned how-to, as a lot of this is based on your own creativity and what fits your aesthetic, this is simply a brief guide to help you find tools and skills needed to break down the task.

Get Creative and Have Fun!
